Grave Excavation for Captain Matthew Flinders

In October 2023 we were awarded the esteemed privilege of carry out the excavation of a Grave at St Mary and the Holy Rood Church at Donington for the reinterment of Captain Matthew Flinders. Matthew Flinders is famous for circumnavigating and mapping Australia during his lifetime for which he is extremely famous for In Australia with numerous highways, universities, statues, national parks etc named after him.

During excavation for HS2, Captain Flinders grave was uncovered and the process of getting him home started and his reinterment is planned for July 2024. We had to excavate the grave with great care and respect for the church and of course the possibility of artefacts within the church floor, this was all done under the watching brief of archaeologists. The grave required excavation this early due to the Marble/Stone slab that is being specially crafted for him and the exact dimensions required. The grave has been shored up correctly and awaits our return shortly before the reinterment and then after for backfilling and making good.
